From the effortless chic of Barcelona, to the cosmopolitan melting-pots that are London and New York, the world stretches out before us as never before.

Amsterdam
Not as large and sprawling as many of its counterparts, even in a short stay you can get to know this delightful city of canals and narrow cobbled streets, quite intimately. Amongst the cities many museums and galleries, the Anne Frank Museum stands out as representative of a city defined by its progressive and tolerant attitudes. Which, of course, is another major attraction for many; the city’s legion of coffee shops and bars blurring into one in a haze of smoke…
-
Athens
Athens stands out for sheer unparalleled historical significance alone. The Parthenon, truly one of the world’s most outstanding monuments, has perched on top of the Acropolis for more than two thousand years. But what makes Athens such a top-class destination is the hustle and bustle of the city that stretches out on the plains of Attica below, and the warmth of the people who live within it.

Bangkok
A mecca for students, backpackers and hostel-goers of all sorts, visitors to Thailand’s capital – Asia’s most popular tourist destination – are spoilt for choice with cultural and historical sites of interest dotted around the city. Bangkok provides a wonderful mixture of brash modernity (typified by its soaring skyscrapers) and older, more traditional aspects. The Rattanakosin area, in particular, is packed with lavish palaces such as The Grand Palace, Wat Phrakaew, and temples, like the staggeringly beautiful Wat Arun.

Barcelona
For backpackers and hostellers it really doesn’t get much better than this… Barcelona is known as a stylish, cosmopolitan city of art and fashion, but also, particularly, for the architecture of Antoni Gaudi. But amongst various other delights, it also boasts a vibrant, hedonistic nightlife packed full of top restaurants, bars and one of the coolest club scenes in Europe. It even has a beach! Best of all, though, it has a wide range of some of the biggest names in hostels.
-
Berlin
One of the most exciting of Europe’s capitals, Berlin’s reputation as a modern, thriving metropolis is well-founded, with the avant-garde leanings of its nightlife, in particular, attracting the attention of the throngs of backpackers and hostel-goers that come to the city. But it is also a city of culture, a city full of museums and art galleries, a city whose history – both ancient and modern – is compelling and rich.
-
Chicago
The ‘Windy City’ rises from the banks of Lake Michigan, its glamorous and turbulent history, with Al Capone battling prohibition in the twenties, as well as a celebrated blues and jazz legacy, affording it a prominent place in the great story that is America. These days sophisticated lakefront dining combines with a music scene that continues to give rise to edgy and ground-breaking house and hip-hop movements. All of which makes the nation’s second city an extremely desirable destination.
-
Dublin
Mention Dublin and talk will inevitably turn to the infamous ‘craic’ and tall tales of rivers of Guinness. But a stay at one of the city’s hostels will reveal that it has far more to offer. One of Europe’s smallest capitals, Dublin is thriving, revelling in a modernity that hasn’t come at the expense of any of its old world character and literary-infused history.
-
Edinburgh
If Edinburgh’s weather rarely wins many plaudits, on every other front, from its glorious Castle, and the elegant squares of the old town, it has an enormous amount to offer the average backpacker or hosteller. Normality is turned on its head, however, in August when the city’s annual Festival bursts noisily into life, and it becomes the cultural epicentre for the whole of Europe.
-
Florence
A favourite among hostel-goers, Florence is hard to match for spectacular beauty, and an intimate and wonderfully romantic feel. If the famous thirteenth-century cathedral, the Duomo, which looms over the city, is the most obvious example of the city’s fascinating history, you don’t have to look far to find other outstanding examples.
-
London
Where do you start with London? It might not be the cheapest, but it is the biggest, grandest and, perhaps, most exciting of Europe’s cities with its high-quality shopping, its history, and its pulsating nightlife, making it an absolute must for all serious hostel-goers. Not so much a city, more an entire universe…
-
Madrid
Spain’s capital city is a testament to everything that’s great about the country, with a host of art galleries – the Prada, the Reina Sofia, and the Thyssen – that are only the pinnacle of its cultural delights. As with the rest of the peninsular, it is a city driven by food and drink, with fantastic restaurants and tapas bars throughout, and a nightlife that gets going late and finishes with breakfast.
-
Milan
Whilst it may be most famous for its cat-walks, its high fashion, and as the financial motor that drives the Italian economy, scratch beneath the surface and Milan is a mixed, vibrant and pleasingly scruffy city. Not that it means you can’t do a bit of shopping…
-
Munich
Munich is often held to be more typically ‘German’ than Berlin. Less obviously cosmopolitan, with an older, more traditional feel, the capital of Bavaria is also Germany’s beer capital. Every year this elegant and beautiful old city is hit by a tide of beer-soaked revellers during the annual Oktoberfest, for which the city is perhaps best-known amongst hostel-goers, students, backpackers and anyone after a good time.
-
New York
From the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building to the enormous Central Park everything about New York is big. Even its nickname – ‘the Big Apple’ – is a testament to size. Which is great news for those heading off to the city, as it’s also got such a seriously large number of things to do, and visitors rarely leave disappointed.
-
Paris
The Eiffel tower, the Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre… With a glorious historical past and a romantic present which few other cities can match, Paris reads like a roll call of must-see European sights. Add to that the very finest food, fashion, and an elegant and sophisticated night scene, and you see why its hostels are bursting all year round with enthralled backpackers and travellers.
-
Prague
In recent years, Prague’s remarkable range of museums, theatres, art galleries and concert halls have seen it installed as one of Eastern Europe’s cultural focal points. A maze of ancient, winding streets, studded with fine examples of Gothic architecture, Prague is also host to any number of bars and cafes full to bursting with noisy, hospitable locals and charmed hostellers.
-
Rome
Like Athens, the breathtakingly beautiful city of Rome is a city of empire, and two great empires – one past, one present – are much in evidence here. Whilst the Roman presided over two of the city’s architectural cornerstones in the mighty Colosseum and the Forum, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican are the glory of the Catholic Church. Away from its monuments and churches, Rome can lay claim to being one of Europe’s most enthralling blends of high culture and fast-living. All in all, a simply unmissable proposition.
-
Stockholm
With cutting edge modern art and design everywhere, it’s hard to argue with Stockholm’s assertion that it is the hippest European city north of London. The city is spread across a number of islands, with the old quarter, Gamla Stan – home to its Royal Palaces – a particular delight. It’s also an attractive destination for backpackers and hostel-goers, as (unusually for Scandinavia) it has a pretty good range of cheap accommodation.
-
Sydney
A picture postcard destination. With gondolas passing sedately down its network of narrow canals, Venice’s reputation as one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in the world is well-founded. The city is full of outstanding visual delights with St. Mark’s square (described by Napoleon as ‘the finest drawing room in Europe’) and the stunning Doge Palace to the fore.
